How to Enroll in Japanese Universities from India?

Japan offers world-class education, a strong research culture, and growing opportunities for international students. This guide explains how to shortlist universities, prepare applications, manage exams and visas, and settle in smoothly.
1) Shortlist Universities & Programs
What to decide: field of study, language of instruction (English/Japanese), intake (April/September), location, and tuition range.

Action: shortlist 3–5 universities that fit your goals.
Tip: always verify requirements on each university’s official admissions page.
2) Find a Supervisor (for Master’s/PhD)
Identify professors whose research aligns with your topic.
Action: read recent publications, prepare a concise research summary, and write a short, respectful outreach email.
Result: better program fit and stronger application.
3) Confirm Entrance Exam Requirements (EJU)
Many undergraduate programs require the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students).
Action: check whether your target universities require EJU; plan for the June or November sitting in India.
Also consider: JLPT (for Japanese-taught programs) or TOEFL/IELTS (for English-taught programs).
4) Prepare Your Application Package
Typical documents:
  • Academic transcripts and certificates (10+2 for UG; bachelor’s for PG)
  • Proof of language proficiency (JLPT/TOEFL/IELTS as applicable)
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) and CV
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Passport copy and financial proof
  • Official translations/notarisation (if requested)
Tip: Create a checklist per university with deadlines and required formats.
5) Apply Directly to Universities
Japan does not use one central portal.
Action: submit applications via each university’s website: forms, uploads, and fees (if any).
Next steps: some programs may invite you to interviews or internal exams.
6) After Application Acceptance
  • The university arranges a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
  • Apply for a Student Visa at the Embassy/Consulate of Japan in India
  • Arrange accommodation (dorm/private), plan living costs
  • On arrival: residence registration, National Health Insurance, orientation
  • Build a balanced list: ambitious, match, and safe options
  • Start language prep early—even basic Japanese helps in daily life
  • Align exam dates (EJU/JLPT/TOEFL/IELTS) with application deadlines
  • Keep copies of all documents and translations in one folder
